View Full Version : Travis' Game One Thoughts

It's going to be a long day. I showed up to work 11 minutes ago and I've already been awake for 3 hours (DVR'd the game and fast forwarded through commercials thus saving two hours of sleep.) This game wasn't for the faint of heart but, in the end, it's nice to hold the best record in baseball if only for one day. Here are some scattered thoughts I had upon watching the Mariners 2012 opener.

1. I'm stoked to watch Dustin Ackley play ball here for a long, long time. He continues to prove how natural of a hitter he is. With that frame and the ability to park one 400 feet to near dead center for a long ball is so impressive. Then, with the game on the line, to turn around a low 90's fastball at his eyeballs for a screaming liner to essentially win the game, I can't say enough. 2 runs batted in and an OPS of 1.400. Keep it up, kid.

2. Felix was sharp today, but that's never a suprise. Had the change and the 2 seam fastball working beatuifully in unison. He continues to get off to slow starts, but once he settles in a game, man is he tough. I also have more confidence in him to get out of jams (twice got Seth Smith with a runner on third and less than 2 outs) than any other pitcher in baseball.

3. Dave wasn't fond of Carp's play in left, but I thought he acquitted himself nicely. It seemed like the ball was really jumping out to left and I thought he handled it well. That catch up against the fence was nice, but he was pretty awful at the plate.

4. Ichiro hasn't changed at all. And not to say that's a bad thing, but this wide stance thing where he's going to drive the ball into the gaps just isn't happening. However, hopefully it means plenty more of his slap infield singles as we saw today. I didn't know his BABIP was so low last year (.284.) That number will certainly improve this season.

5. The power bats aren't tuned in yet. And it's not crazy to see that in the first game of the year but Smoak, Montero, Carp and Olivo all had some pretty good pitches to hit and were often off-balanced and fooled by the pitch selection. We won't many games with our 4-5-6-7 guys combining to go 0-17. Blame these dudes for Felix not getting a W.

6. The bullpen was sharp and I expect it to be pretty good with Wilhemsen taking the 8th and League in the 9th.

Overall I'm please because it's a win and my two favorite players were responsible for the win (Ackley and Felix.) But the middle of the order and the inability to support Felix, once again, is always troubling. Nonetheless, we're 1-0 and I hope Vargas can go out and get 'em tomorrow morning.

I thought one of the keys to the game was Wilhelmsen tossing up two zeros in the 9th and 10th. Thought for sure the A's were going to walk off both those innings as our luck seemed to be running thin.

I have to disagree with Dave on Carp's LF play...he looks comfortable out there and has done a great job transitioning to a full time OF. If he continues to hit like he did at the end of last year, he's our man out there.

Oh yeah, and we should be able to hit Bartolo "Fatass" Colon tomorrow.

Exactly. I knew we had to get the line-up back over to Ackley and Ichiro to have a shot to win it. It was nice being able to use Figgins as a runner-advancer in that spot. When Ack came up with Ryan on 3rd and only one out, I don't think I've had more confidence in one of our guys (offensively) to get it done in a long time. I like that he identified a pitch up and took a hack realizing that worst case scenerio is probably a deep enough fly to pick up the RBI.

You getting up in time for the game tomorrow?

I thought Carp looked great in the field, but absolute shit at the plate. He struggled all spring too.

As for the middle of the order...Montero had a couple ABs where he hit it well - one right at the shortstop, then one he just got under to right center. Smoak hit one well too to right that was close to being a double. Olivo, well he just isn't very good, but he can pop the occasional homer out of nowhere. I think they'll be fine going forward.

Yessir. How about yourself?

And I had the same feeling with Ackley. I got to see him hit for a long time at UNC - if there's one thing that man can do, he can hit. He's only going to get better and better with more experience.

I might DVR it and watch it when I get home. I don't know if I can zombie it through work two days in a row lol. Then again, I'm sure I'll be checking the site before I get home so I'll probably end up finding out the score.

With Ackley, are you concerned with the error at all? It looked like it got on him quicker than he expected because of the carpet. I thought he'd recover but then he rushed the throw and, well, those kind of things just can't happen.

I think he will be fine. He's still adjusting to the position and is well ahead of schedule by my watch. He played outfield in college before his injury then was moved to first his last year or so. That play was just a tough play. The bad hop ate him up, and then he panicked, rushed the throw and didn't set his feet. He will learn from it and get better as he goes along. He's already good at turning DPs, which is arguably the hardest part about the position.

I told myself that if the M's won the opener, then I'd stay up and watch tomorrow. Looks like I'll have to stay up........I'm going to be one tired dude.
