It's very strange to me that Figgins is still on the roster. I understand that he can back up multiple positions, but is his only value to the team that he can back up third? We have outfielders and Seager can spell Ackley at second more than adequately, so is that it? Pinch runner, perhaps? We have Kawasaki. Is there something I'm missing?
The fan base is over it. We've mutually agreed that he was a total mistake. The degree to which Jack Z is accountable seems to be the only issue. He is, of course, responsible - It's whether or not it matters that "everyone" thought it was a "good" deal at the time. I don't think that it does. I mean, that's just the way it goes. Being a GM is tough. He looked like a solid pick up, and there was no reason to believe he would regress to HALF of what he became, but at the end of the day the GM has to answer for it. You can't get credit for finding diamonds in the rough, and be immune when perceived diamonds turn out to be shit. It's part of your overall grade. The fact that if you're a GM long enough, you WILL have some bad contracts, and that you WILL draft some busts doesn't really matter. Figgins is a strike against the regime, and in my opinion playing him at all sprinkles more salt on a festering wound.
He gets a hit, and it's "Ok, well that doesn't suck, but where was that?" and, "Oh great, now they're going to play him more".
He needs to be released. Sooner than later. He needed to be released a long time ago. It was a mistake to sign him, and every day he continues to be on the 25 man roster is a mistake. Maybe they're hoping he has SOME value in the way of a "We'll eat the entire contract if you give us an A ball prospect you don't like" way at the deadline, but come August, he needs to be gone.
The front office has already taken the hit from the fans, releasing him will not make that worse. Keeping him around will.
