Mariners acquire of Eric Thames from Toronto Blue Jays
SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager Jack Zduriencik announced tonight that the club has acquired outfielder Eric Thames from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher Steve Delabar.

Thames, 25, was hitting .335 (65x194) with 31 runs, 15 doubles, 3 triples, 6 home runs and 32 RBI in 53 games with AAA Las Vegas (entering Monday) in the Pacific Coast League. Over parts of the last two seasons in AAA has combined to hit .344 (139x404) with 69 runs, 40 doubles, 7 triples, 13 home runs and 77 RBI in 106 games (entering Monday).

He made his Major League debut with Toronto in 2011, hitting .262 (95x362) with 24 doubles, 5 triples, 12 home runs and 37 RBI in 95 games (entering Monday). In parts of two seasons in the Majors has combined to hit .257 (131x510) with 31 doubles, 6 triples, 15 home runs and 48 RBI in 141 games. In his Major League career, he has played in 95 games (89 starts) in left field and 27 games (25 starts) in right field.

Thames was teammates with Dustin Ackley on the 2010 Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. He was originally selected by Toronto in the 7th round of the 2008 amateur draft out of Pepperdine University (Malibu, CA).

Delabar, 29, appeared in 34 games during four stints with the Mariners going 2-1, 4.17 ERA (17 ER, 36.2 IP) with 46 strikeouts and nine home runs allowed. He ranked 8th amongst AL rookie relievers in appearances. With AAA Tacoma this season was 0-1, 3.75 ERA (5 ER, 12.0 IP) with 12 strikeouts in nine appearances. Delabar was signed as a minor league free agent on April 20, 2011 after not pitching in 2010. He pitched two seasons in the independent leagues (2008-09) after spending five seasons in the San Diego Padres organization. The Padres selected him in the 29th round of the 2003 June Draft.

This trade happened awful quietly, Any opinions on getting this guy?

It's better than seeing Peguero hit I guess. But he's another OFer in the long line of has some potential, but strikes out way too much in our current system. My guess is he will platoon with Wells more often than not. Hopefully we catch lightning in a bottle as he's about to enter the prime of his career.

Yeah, I agree. I do think he was a good pick up for Delabar

Sounds like a pretty fair deal. They need arms, we need bats... Both are mlb ready. Maybe the best trade of this mid season for both teams. I wish good luck to Delabar, I hope he will stay in the majors.

Yeah, it's a good deal. Both teams dealt from areas of strength and we got a possible league average outfielder, for a possible average bullpen arm. Worst case, as DA posted- He's a platoon bat that is far better than Peguero. I've heard horrible reviews of his defense, and the numbers support them, but if he can add some pop to the line up and not be a liability, the supporting cast can hopefully make up for any bases he gives up with his arm and his range. He's got a good attitude as well and seems like a good guy to have in the clubhouse. When asked to give his overall impression of the trade he said, "it's a win for the Mariners."

Clarknova: Judging from the game tonight, it seems that he wasn't the only Blue Jay with Fielding issues.

Low risk trades, hopefully get a nice reward for it!

Looking good so far! It's nice to see him continue to have the pop in his bat! Keep it up big guy!

One nice slide in LF, a game tying 2run homer... I've seen worst for a first home game
