After Jaso knocked in that sacrifice fly to sending Saunders in to win the game tonight against the Twins, we surpassed the Toronto Blue Jays in the rankings for the Wild Card. We were last a while back, now we are 6th.
We're two behind the red Sox to take 5th. Do you think we still have a chance?

Thinking about the playoffs when you are under 500 is ludicrous. I like it.

Hey if the Athletics can pull something out of their asses and get in the race, why the hell can't we!?

Finishing at .500 would be a major improvement mostly when you look at where before the ASG. FInishing in 5th place on the WC, as it's just for "glory", would be really nice because it'll give the guys something real to built on. Something bigger thant "we have potentiel but we're still dead last in our division with a losing record...". Finishing in... well 7th or 8th all division mixed would be really interesting and reveleating of the progress this team made during one season.
I'm not saying we ain't got any chance, as I'm optismistic, but I feel that missing the wild card by short would create a hunger feeling we could use next season. Our players should be more confident and greedier. Something like "Ok now we know we have the potentiel and prove it for a half season... Now let's get it for real !"
As E. Thames said (while his mouth full of shaving cream) : "We don't quit ! Go mariners !

Lets crunch some numbers
The mariners currently stand at 58-64 8.5 behind the wildcard leaders. There are four very good teams up there Det, LAA, Oak, TB.
If the mariners have a great last 40 games and keep the current clip lets say they finish 26-13. That would be a very good finish against rangers, laa, oak, bos etc but lets just say...
This would put them at 84-78. Not a bad season considering the first half but still would take some really great baseball
The top four teams are all about 10
Games over 500. If the all go 20-20 then they are still 85-75. The chances that two of those four will play better then 500 is likely.
So you would need 3 of 4 to play below 500 and a great mariners run to even come close. Not impossible and its all about your latest streak but mathematically you are asking a lot and baseball is all about the numbers.
Having said that a 20 game win streak would cancel out all of the above lol

Like Geoff Baker on the Times said, the M's have to go on a big winning streak to make up so much ground. a 10-13 game winning streak would be crucial.

We can take some games as we'll see for 6 games each of LAA and OAK. I'll be happy if we finish .500 AND anywhere else but in last place of the division. Icing on the cake is for next season...

You expect me to believe that Geoff Baker was espousing sobering and depressing statistics? Come on.

As long as we finish near .500 I'll be happy. Think of our predictions we made at the beginning of the season. Most were throwing some rather high wins up. Meanwhile, the beginning of the season was not very encouraging, so I pretty much expected a repeat of 2011. But that has changed since the AS break. I think we can easily get to .500, and hopefully closer to the ridiculous predictions made at the beginning of the season.

I like the reports about the team being very optimistic about their chances. Hearing from Thames that the playoffs is the only goal is good stuff! I'm not counting on anything, but crazier shit has happened to Seattle teams! (Seahawks winning division at 7-9, remember?)
I do think it's unrealistic to jump on that wagon, but hey! the team has been playing lights out and if they can keep it up, who knows! I'm still root'n for em to keep it up and either way, this is a great sign for the next season!!
Go M's!

It's up to the team as september is nearly all about team with better record than us. But we'll need to be near perfect against OAK and LAA. I like our chances against the Orioles, last time they swept us, let's show what we're really made of.
I just hope the momentum doesn't end with a bad serie in Chicago as they really hurt us in the last few years.

While we play the White Sox, four teams ahead of us will be battling in series themselves. The Angels play the Tigers, while the Rays continue to play the A's. Hopefully they beat each other up.

Now that the wild card is officially out i think te focus should be to finish above .500
Whats the over/under on 82 wins?
Also if this happens it is likely that the west will have all 4 teams over .500, has any division ever had every team finish with a winning record?
LeFrançais

Finishing .500 would be a real satisfaction, this mean a third straight winning month as we'll face nearly only playoffs contenders. Let's see what septembers callups can bring during that period...
