Russell Wilson will be the Seahawks' starting quarterback.

Coach Pete Carroll made that announcement in a conference call with Seattle reporters on Sunday evening.

"He's earned this job," Carroll said. "It was a legitimate competition as we said from the beginning and with the opportunity he's taken advantage of, he deserves to start."

Wilson was chosen in the third round by Seattle. He was part of a three-way competition for the starting job. Matt Flynn will be the backup after being signed in the offseason as a free agent from Green Bay.

Flynn's reaction to the news?

"He's disappointed," Carroll said. "Matt came here to be the starter, and he took it exactly the way I think a great competitor would."

Carroll said that Flynn's arm injury -- while it's not considered serious -- did have an impact. Specifically, he wasn't able to present a counterargument on Friday in Kansas City. Flynn was slated to enter the game in the third quarter and likely would have had at least one series with the team's first-unit offense before the Seahawks turned to the backups. But a sore elbow prevented Flynn from playing.

"I think it makes the decision clearer," Carroll said. "Unfortunately, Matt has not been able to answer and respond by playing last week and again this week as much as we would like for his sake."

As for the severity of the injury? Carroll said it's a muscle inflammation, and while he wasn't able to throw Sunday, it's not considered an injury that will threaten his season.

As for Tarvaris Jackson, the team's expectation is that he will be traded to Buffalo though that deal has not been finalized, according to Carroll.

"He deserves a chance to be playing so Buffalo came after him," Carroll said. "I hope it's a good thing for him. He did a great job for us and he proved everything you'd ever want to see out of a competitor."

Would have been a joke for Caroll to not name Wilson the starter the locker room would have laughed at his competition thing.

Call me crazy, but I am not upset that the team decided to go with the quarterback they liked better. All these people chirping about how much money Flynn is getting paid need to realize that A. He's not even the most expensive backup in the NFL, and B. He was signed before the draft when the Seahawks did not have Wilson and had no idea that he would be available OR how he would look in practice and exhibition. He flat outplayed Flynn. I for one, am glad they're leaning toward what they believe is a formula for winning. We have what looks to be a pretty good couple of quarterbacks. It has not looked like that since Hasselbeck was here. I'll support the decision until it looks dumb, but leading 6 scoring drives against a pretty good Chiefs defense, running well, passing well, and making good decisions is pretty awesome for his third appearance as a pro, pre-season or not.

Russell Wilson earned that spot fair and square. I have yet to meet anyone that disagrees.

T-Jack is finally gone for a draft pick and T.O. didn't make the team. I'm liking the decisions the hawks have made this season!

Pete and Schneider have always made a point to say that money will not dictate who is playing, glad they're practicing what they preach.

Hey Sports Fans!

HA! Congratulations! None a' you guys have taken 'sports talk radio' seriously. Yeah jeezuz, switch off the retrospect and turn up the conjecture, cuz' I got a feelin'.

The first three games of the 2012 season appear a natural progression with regard to degree of opponent skill level/difficulty. Arizona is in the bag, right? Then there is a major measuring stick vs. Dallas. We hit that one, oh baby. And the cherry on top would be Green Bay. The Hawks go three and 0, start thinkin' playoffs.

Remember the old joke, "I heard the Seahawks are supposed to be pretty good this year" (?) ...This time I ain't kiddin'.

Had the pleasure of watching Russell Wilson in person quite a few times in person at NC State when he went up against my Pirates. Incredible person and a great, hard-nosed player. You guys will love him, if you don't already. He's probably the only N.C. State player I've ever found myself liking. That said, I will always remember him most for the third down throw he makes in this video. :)

Hey Igoe, who is your NFL team again? For some reason I had this feeling it wasn't the Panthers, but was Denver? Is that right?
