Why did we get rid of Russell Branyan, who, though injured, wanted to stay
and we keep Griffey?

Branyan wanted a guaranteed 2 year deal for 30 million dollars to start the offseason.
Jack Z. knew he had the chance to get injured again and there was no way we were going to pay him that much money.
We offered him a 1 year deal with a club option for the 2nd year with substantially less money and he ended up turning it down quickly.
We then traded for Kotchman and suddenly had no place for Russell.
Branyan kept holding out due to his agent trying to get him much more money than was realistically possible and he ended up signing a 1 year 1.5 million dollar deal...So yeah, Russell and his agent screwed themselves over.

And I will note that for the amount of home runs he hit last year, 1.5 million is chicken feed.

But how much are we paying Griffey and for what?
Is he like David Beckham for AC Milan etc and his endorsement value justifies his inclusion.
I know Griffey is a baseball great but everyone has a sell by date who go on too long eg another American legend, Roy Jones Jr - best boxer of all time until he went light heavy abd look at his record since Tarver
