The Kansas City Royals (36-46) make their first trip to Seattle of the 2010 season to take on the Mariners (34-47).
The Royals have been playing much better baseball lately as they have won 7 of their last 10 and have climbed back to only 10 games under .500. The resurgence of ace Zack Greinke over the past couple of starts has the Royals riding a hot streak that they will hope to keep going on their current west coast road trip. Former Mariner slugger Jose Guillen is having a great season in Kansas City carrying the team's offense by belting 14 homers while driving in 52 runs.
Leadoff hitter Scott Podsednik has been the team's biggest catalyst in the leadoff spot with a .347 OBP and 24 stolen bases already in 2010. The Mariners pitching staff will have to keep Podsednik off the basepaths and Guillen from driving in multiple runs in order to win this three-game series.
Seattle gets a huge boost of starting pitching with the return of left-hander Erik Bedard. Bedard, when healthy, is one of the top lefties in the game and gives Seattle one of the best top three in a starting rotation in all of Major League Baseball. He will start on Tuesday and be on a 90-95 pitch count. Look for him to be a little rusty at first, but if he can stay healthy and effective, he will offset the loss of Cliff Lee somewhat when he is traded.
The Mariners offense has come alive since aquiring Russell Branyan from the Indians. In three of the five games that Branyan has started for Seattle, the Mariners have managed to put of seven or more runs up on the scoreboard. Although he is strikeout prone, the lefty slugger provides the offense with a legitimate middle-of-the-order bat that can change a game with one swing. Before the trade, Seattle had to string 5 consecutive singles together in order to score multiple runs in an inning.

Pitching Matchups:
Brian Bannister, RHP (7-6, 5.46 ERA) vs. Felix Hernandez, RHP (6-5, 3.03 ERA)
Zack Greinke, RHP (4-8, 3.94 ERA) vs. Erik Bedard, LHP (1st start of 2010)
Kyle Davies, RHP (4-6, 5.64 ERA) vs. Doug Fister, RHP (3-4, 3.22 ERA)

My prediction is we take two of three. I think we win games one and three, but the Royals take game two. Greinke always seems to have his way with us and I expect Bedard to be really rusty, but who knows, maybe he'll dominate for six innings. We really need a sweep heading into a TOUGH four-game set with the Yankees right before the All-Star break.

By the way, the Mariners haven't stated who will start game three, but I'm assuming it is going to be Fister since he is due up next. It could be Rowland-Smith if they want to give Fister extra rest prior to the break so watch out for that news.

I'm gonna say 1 out of three, and it'll be the 6th that we win since me and clark will bring good luck to the team. How's that for a sabremetric analysis of why we'll win!

I say we'll sweep. For no other reason than the M's defy all logic when it comes to prediction so I'm basing this on the fact that if they tend to do the opposite of what I think will happen, then generally the opposite becomes the expected. So, if I look at a three game set against the Royals, another team in the toilet and one of the AL bottom 4 (Seattle, KC, Baltimore, Cleveland), my first inclination would be to agree with Igoe4Mariners- We have Felix in game 1, JosephC and I are batting 1.000 in attendance influenced victories and will be at game 2, and game 3 is a toss up (which this year we typically lose). So, the opposite of my logical inclination (yes, my presence, the presence of others, and other such talismans- like Jack in The Box Churros- are harbingers of victory in my totally logical non-superstitious mind) becomes likely. The opposite of 2 of 3 would be 1 of 3 because you can't win 3 of 2 and 2 of 3 would be a series win, so it has to be a series loss. HOWEVER, if as I theorize above, the opposite now holds true (or, as the late child molester Michael Jackson once said "The lie becomes the truth, hey hey") then it would be the opposite of 1 of 3 as this has now become the likely outcome (see, it's not because they suck that they wouldn't win a series against the Royals... It's because it's "Opposite Year!!").

Given that I also automatically assume that given his last outing against the Yankees- Felix will dominate game 1, then obviously he'll get knocked around by KC. Willie Bloomquist hits 3 home runs and hits for the cycle and Yuniesky Betancourt walks 4 times becomes the likely outcome. If I think about what the least likely outcome would be, I guess I'd say a series sweep by the M's, because they almost never do that against crappy teams. It's only teams like the Reds (#1 offense in the NL going in) that they do that. So, that is now what I think will become likely. Now, you may ask yourself, "Hey, I can't believe I'm still reading this pointless babble, but if "the lie" truly does become "the truth" and the opposite of what is likely, is likely, then doesn't it beg to reason that your first guess will be your best. The answer to that is no, and I can tell you that because it hasn't been. At all. All year. Hey, I don't make the laws of nature- take that up with Carl Everett. Also, to answer another question you might be asking yourself- No, I don't do lines of cocaine in the morning. I drink a shit ton of coffee and then log in and start typing- usually with no direction or idea about how what I'm typing is going to end. Hence the babble. Hope everyone had a happy 4th! Go M's! Felix Navidad!

1 out of 3. Felix will have another good outing tonight, but Bedard will probably only go 5 innings, and I definitely don't trust the bullpen to get the job done. If Fister is pitching Game 3, I predict a loss. He just hasn't looked himself out there since coming off the DL. If Rowland-Smith takes the hill however, I could see a W in our future. He's looked good in three straight starts now, and he's always been a slow starter.

Anytime you lose a series at home to the Royals...you know you suck ass. If you get swept at home by the Royals, well, let's not go there...
