Say what you want to about Jack Z, but this guy is a genius. He knew deep in his heart pre-season that the M's would never take on the Angels or Rangers. So what does he do? He goes and uses his knowledge and picks the worst players possible. Kotchman can't hit, I'll pick him. Byrnes looks like the energy bunny on weed, I'll take him. Milton Bradley breaks bats on his leg, You gotta love this guy.

But what evil Jack Z had in the back of his mind was that great #1 pick that he might just win. He can fool the rest of the blogosphere, but he won't fool me. All the worthless players are signed for one year deals (or arb), so fool the division and next year throw out all your #1 pick, #2 pick and that dude who goes by the name "diabolical stuff". Figgy was just paid off to perform bad. I bet he got a bonus, maybe even a pay raise for the dugout fight. Next year he is going to get general manager of the year and Wakamatsu is going to be hailed the man who knows too much.

What say you? Am I on to something? Think I'll get a letter from Z and staff to keep this quiet?

I'll book it, but will you come back to eat crow when you're wrong?

Smoak was rushed through the Rangers system. He was not ready for the big leagues when he came over in the Lee deal. His lack of patience at the plate (something he didn't show in Texas) here, shows that he was nervous. Now he's in AAA, getting some key time to develop, and becoming our first baseman for the future. Keep in mind we had no prospects at first base before acquiring Smoak (no, Mike Carp doesn't count). At catcher, Adam Moore was waiting, and now that he's getting a chance to start everyday, he looks more comfortable. At the least, he's been better than Rob Johnson. There's also the aspect of hurting a division rival. Besides the fact that Smoak has been compared to Mark Texieira on the high end, and Lyle Overbay on the low end, the Mariners also got the Rangers' 2007 First Round Pick, Blake Beavan, who by all accounts can be an effective, middle of the rotation starter, and Josh Leuke, who's mowed down batters in relief work in AA and AAA. That's 3 impact players that we have that Texas no longer does. I don't really care if Montero turns out to be a better player. First base was a more glaring need, and we were able to take one of the top prospects in the majors from within our division.

I wonder what mikepelfrey thinks about the Cliff Lee trade?
