DENVER - A pastor of a local church in Denver was killed in a crash in Lincoln County. A major league baseball player and the pastor's son were both injured.
Pat McKendry, 45, of Arvada, died in the crash.
Two others survived, including the driver, Clancy McKendry, 21, of Arvada and Josh Bard, 32, of Castle Rock. Bard is a catcher for the Seattle Mariners major league baseball team.
The accident happened at around 5:40 a.m. near the town of Hugo in southeastern Colorado.
Friends of the McKendry family told FOX31 News that Pat, Clancy and Josh were headed on a hunting trip.
Pat McKendry was one of six elders at the L2 Church located at Colfax and Columbine. Josh Bard, who spoke briefly to FOX31 News, said McKendry was a longtime friend of his and the community lost a wonderful husband and father of four.
The Colorado State Patrol says Clancy McKendry was driving the blue Ford F-150 and was heading eastbound on Country Road T. He started to turn onto Country Road 23 when he apparently lost control on a curve.
The truck rolled several times and came to rest on its roof. Pat McKendry, who was sitting in the rear of the truck was ejected and pinned underneath the truck.
He was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. Clancy McKendry and Josh Bard were transported to a local hospital in Hugo with minor injuries.
Both were wearing seat belts. Officials say there was no alcohol or drugs involved in the accident, which is still under investigation.
McKendry's colleagues at the L2 Church say he did just about everything for his church which he loved and cherished. Josh Bard, a major league baseball catcher and designated hitter for the Seattle Mariners who also played for Cherry Creek High School, told Fox31News he is devastated by the loss.
Pat McKendry is survived by his wife and four children. The L2 church will hold a memorial service for Pat McKendry on Saturday, October 9 at 2:00 p.m.
